Kevin’s Caterpillar was designed by Kevin Howell after a simple summertime observation turned into a highly effective fly. While working on the roof of his house one summer, Kevin noticed caterpillars crawling everywhere and realized many of them had to be falling into the river below—and that fish were almost certainly keyed in on them.
After finishing the job, he tied a few patterns and put them to the test the very next day on a fishing trip with his buddy John. The result was undeniable: it was the only fly they could catch fish on that day.
This pattern truly shines from mid-summer through the first heavy frost, when terrestrial insects are abundant and fish are actively looking up. If you’re fishing July through early fall, Kevin’s Caterpillar is a must-have pattern that consistently produces when other flies fail.
